CEU's/College Credit

By popular demand, Mannette Steel Drums has partnered with West Virginia University to offer continuing education units (1-3 credits) for the 2008 Festival of Steel. Interested participants must contact WVU directly to apply for admission to the university. The application process can be completed on-line at http://admissions.wvu.edu/undergraduate/application/. All students, whether graduate or undergraduate, should complete the undergraduate application. However, participants who have already completed a degree should indicate on the application that they wish to be considered as non-degree students. Those who have not yet completed a degree program should apply as visiting students. Once your application has been accepted, the next step will be to register for either MUSC 495 (undergraduates) or MUSC 695 (graduates). This can also be done on-line by following instructions at http://www.arc.wvu.edu/admissions/registration.html. Any questions regarding the application and registration processes should be directed to WVU, by calling Admissions & Records at 304-293-2121 or 800-344-WVU1. Please note that MSD does not have any information regarding the application and admission processes beyond what is given here, and cannot act as admissions counselors!

How do you decide which band to place participants in? Can I be in the same band with my friends & family?

A: The first consideration in assembling bands is the skill level indicated on your registration form. Ideally, we want you to feel challenged, but not overwhelmed. More importantly, we want you to have a good experience. Please indicate your band preference according to how challenging you want the experience to be. If you arrive at rehearsals to find that you are in over your head, or that you are bored at the level you originally indicated, don't panic! We will be happy to facilitate your move to another band accordingly. This is best done within the first day or two, so that you have plenty of time to learn the pieces that you will be playing in the final performance, and for the sake of your fellow band members and the cohesiveness of the group. Once we have have determined the size and instrumentation requests at each skill level, our second consideration is in how to make the bands balanced and manageable in size. We will make every effort to accommodate requests to keep groups and families together. Preference is given to keeping children with their parents, for obvious reasons. However, if you come with a group of 5 bass players who have all requested the intermediate band, for example, you shouldn't be surprised to find yourself separated from friends because of our need to divide the intermediate group into two smaller and instrumentally balanced bands. You will receive your band assignments and rehearsal locations upon arrival.
